I leaned back in the seat, loosely gripping the steering wheel as I gazed over the beautiful Yukon landscape. I had just finished listening to yet another podcast of someone sharing how they had overcome incredible odds to make their dream a reality. From spanx to Larabars to triathlete champions, I had heard the full spectrum! Yet, there had been a common aspect to each of the stories that left me feeling a little uncomfortable, and at the same time reassured.
No matter the age of the individual, their background, or the goal they were pursuing, each story had a moment when the individual hit rock bottom. As they would describe that moment of utter despair, I was amazed each time that they were able to find the power within them to keep going! And in that, was the secret to their success, to any success. Persistence.
I found comfort in this because I knew that in order for Ryan and I to be successful in the pursuit of our own goals, all we needed to do was to never give up! Yet, I couldn't shake that unsettling feeling of what it would be like to hit rock bottom, and if I would be strong enough to keep going.
Feb 2019 was when Ryan and I decided to start chasing our dreams. Sure, you could argue that we had already been pursuing our dreams before then, but it had been more of a casual pursuit. The kind where you have a vague idea of what you want, and talk about it every so often, but never take any real risks to go after it, and are pretty much waiting for the dream to come to you or at least meet you halfway. But in Feb 2019, we pulled out all the stops!
Throughout these beginning stages of our journey, what has really bothered me, is that every struggle to success story that I read or listen to is told in hindsight. Sure, I get it. Once you've overcome the challenges, learned the lessons, and become successful, it's a whole lot easier to offer encouragement, motivation, and advice. You've done, you've made it!
But while I could resonate with the difficult experiences they were sharing, and felt motivated by the fact that they had overcome, I still felt a slight disconnect. They had already made it, and I had not.
It's easy to talk about not giving up when you've already made it!
I wanted to hear someone talk about their struggle to success story in real time!
Except I guess it would probably be more like a STRUGGLE, success, STRUGGLE, success, STRUGGLE, to eventually SUCCESS story!
But there weren't any.
And when I tried to connect with others who were at a similar stage of progress as us, there wasn't a whole lot of positive encouragement or motivation. I mean, I get it, it's hard not to get scared or desperate or pessimistic when you are still in the STRUGGLE stage and haven't even had much success. I've definitely been there.
But I didn't want to believe that I could only be happy, reassured, and supportive after I was successful.
Ryan and I both strongly believed that the process of chasing after our dreams was as much to be enjoyed and cherished, as the end result of achieving our dreams!
And let me tell you, we are still very much in the process!
Chasing after dreams is hard! There are moments of incredible energy and momentum, and equal amounts of discouragement. You'll make numerous sacrifices, and develop a lot more humility. But you know what, life is going to be hard regardless of whether you are chasing your dreams or not! Sure, it may be a little more comfortable, and a tad bit more secure if you decide to passively pursue your dreams, and just wait around for them to meet up with you; but there will still be plenty of other challenges you'll have to face.
So why not choose your challenges?! Why not chase your dreams! You only have one life to live, so go big! What could be worse than coming to the end of your life and wondering, "What if?"
So if you are about to embark on the journey of chasing your dreams, or perhaps you already have, I invite you to join me as I share our struggle to success story...in real time!!
Ryan & Courtney Bringhurst, we are a happily married power couple! Our purpose together is to inspire and uplift others to live the life they were meant to live, as well as to find true joy and satisfaction in their life's journey.
